Investor FAQ

  • Why should I invest with Fisgard?

Investing means conserving your principal and growing your money over time. When you take chances with stocks and mutual funds you risk increased volatility and losing not only any gains you may have made, but also your principal. That means putting your hard-earned retirement and future comfort in jeopardy.

Fisgard puts the security of your principal first. That’s why we invest only in quality mortgages secured by valuable Canadian real estate property. Our goal is to invest in mortgages that provide our investors with income, steady growth, real estate security and reasonable returns through the Mortgage Investment Corporation, Fisgard Capital Corporation.

  • How do I invest with Fisgard?

You can invest cash and Registered Plan funds such as the RRSP, TFSA, RESP, RDSP, FHSA, or RRIF. You can also transfer Registered funds from another institution to Fisgard. Just call, and we’ll do it for you.

  • How long is my money committed?

Your funds are committed for one, three, or five years. You choose.

  • How is my investment secured?

Fisgard’s investments are secured by Canadian real estate property and the personal guarantees of mortgage borrowers.

  • What fees are associated with investing?

At Fisgard there are no start-up fees associated with opening a cash account. RRSP and RRIF accounts cost $125 per year for a primary plan and $100 per year for a secondary plan (such as the Spousal RRSP or Spousal RRIF). Fisgard RESPs, TFSAs and RDSPs cost $50 per year. Our Registered Plan costs are among the lowest in Canada.

  • How am I taxed?

Your returns are taxed as interest, not dividends.

  • Are investors notified when their investment is due?

Yes, with each Monthly Statement investors are provided details of investments maturing the following quarter.

  • Does Fisgard have a succession plan?

Yes. An important feature of Fisgard’s business is succession planning. We have been in business for a long time and will be for many years to come. Fisgard strives to be three-deep at all company positions. Back-up is very important to us.

  • How do I benefit from compound interest?

By reinvesting dividends compound interest increases your investment exponentially without any work. Unlike most banks that compound your interest once a year, Fisgard compounds your interest quarterly or monthly. For example, an investment of $15,000 earning 5% over 30 years earns $22,500 with simple interest but can earn $51,603 with compound interest (compounded quarterly).
